In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past week or so, former Oakland Athletics (and Tampa Bay Rays) utility man Ben Zobrist has been officially traded to the Royals for minor league pitchers Sean Manaea and Aaron Brooks, as the deadline nears.
Everyone in baseball knew he’d be moved, possibly to the Mets or Yankees. And then it happened. He was traded to the suddenly all-mighty Royals.
But while the versatile switch-hitter is known best for simply getting on base (he has the fourth-most walks in the majors since the start of the 2009 season with 537), it’s the load of intriguing nicknames that keeps fans and funny sports meme makers truly engaged in this MLB veteran’s life. Ben Kenobi seems the most fitting candidate as a doppelganger, though I can’t say they really look alike. Name will do for now.
Zo, Zobe, Ben-zee, Z-man, Zobo and Zorilla are all top notch, but all pale in comparison to the moniker of Luke Skywalker’s legendary mentor – Zobi Wan Kenobi. He knows Jedi things, he’s got a god-like beard, and he’s just looking to have a reckless time with some Ewoks. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi before him, Zobrist is seasoned in the art of the Jedi. In other words, the dude can play ball.
Despite the fact that this is seemingly the 23rd team he’s played for, Zobrist is the ideal player for any ball club. He wins, hits, ages appropriately, and god knows what else. And at 34 years young, Ben Zobrist is far from finished.
