In 2002, renowned lyricist Jay-Z was quoted as saying “Real recognize real and you lookin familiar” – buried in the dialogue of All Around The World” on his album The Blueprint 2. 12 years later, horribly named artist Ty Dolla $ign did something similar.. unoriginally spitting “Real recognize real, that’s familiar..” Really stroking his own brush.
Now why is this relevant, you ask?
New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia and his 41 saves is why.
Seemingly set to dethrone legendary save-blower Armando Benitez as the Mets’ single-season saves leader, Jeurys Familia has become the sturdy achilles of his poised New York. Originally the third closer behind Jenrry Mejia and Bobby Parnell entering the season, Familia now feels right at home as the door slammer behind a so-far-dominant bullpen.
Keep in mind Familia began his professional career as a starter, touring through the minors looking to show off both his durability and filthy right arm. The longtime SP, however, would soon find comfort as a RP when there was no room in the rotation. And since July 30 – his last destructive outing – Familia has allowed only one run in 23 innings (a 0.39 ERA).
I think it’s safe to say that while Familia may seem Familiar to most – a la the next Benitez – he is a far different and more focused animal.
