Steven Matz Promoted by Mets, Ready to Shine

(Last Updated On: April 7, 2017)

Despite a bevy of arm injuries during his minor league career – the most significant of which forced Tommy John surgery on the young hurler in 2011 – Long Island product and former 2009 2nd round pick Steven Matz has done nothing but dominate, stay quiet and continue to impress fans, announcers and scouts alike.

This year Matz led the Pacific Coast League with seven wins and a 2.19 ERA, as well as 94 strikeouts and just 31 walks in 90.1 innings. Hitters are barely eclipsing the Mendoza Line with a .213 average against him. It’s pretty much time for the kid to arrive; he can’t be contained any longer.

And in Home Alone 2 fashion, Steven Matz is now being thrust into Round 2 of Terry Collins’ 6-man-rotation effort. Maybe promoting their top pitching prospect left is ironically the spark the Mets need to get their offense started. And by started, I mean the opposite of continuing to ruin young and talented pitching performances by statistically hitting for the second-worst average in all of baseball (.237) and scoring the fourth fewest runs in the league (3.58).
